Shown in Eye Below Ear at Kunsthal Mechelen, alongside Eleanor Ivory Weber, Ghislaine Leung, JJJJJerome Ellis, Julius Pristauz, Lily Greenham & Andrew Walsh Lister, P. Staff, Reinier Vrancken, Serene Hui & Slow Reading Club. Curated by Alicja Melzacka and assisted by Sophie Fitze.
The angles at which the doors are fixed correspond to the mouth positions adopted when producing specific ‘hesitation markers’—sounds that help listeners identify pauses and speakers gain time to think.
This installation also works with the rhythm of opening and closing. Placing your hand on the wall, you can sense the vibrations sent out by the contact speaker on the other side. The sound originates from two rooms adjacent to the exhibition space, which had been permanently sealed off, yet outlined on the floor plan shared with the artist.
